LOCAL NOTES : Former Softball Player of Year Named Santa Clara Coach

Marcy Crouch, The Times Orange County player of the year in softball in 1995, has been named softball coach at Santa Clara.

Crouch, who graduated from Stanford in June, accepted her first coaching position on Friday, according to her father, Cary Crouch, who coaches softball at Laguna Hills High.

Crouch was a three-time first-team member of The Times all-county softball team, and led Marina to Southern Section titles in 1994-95 in softball, and three section soccer titles from 1993-95.

BASKETBALL

Tickets for the sixth Wooden Classic, scheduled Nov. 27 at the Arrowhead Pond, are on sale at the Pond box office.

The men’s basketball doubleheader will match Stanford against Auburn, followed by USC versus Duke.

Ticket prices are $15, $20, $30, $50, $75 and $150. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster. The event benefits the Special Olympics of Southern Californiaand Southern California high school athletics.

SOCCER

Linda Lewin has resigned as girls’ soccer coach at Tustin High to take a full-time teaching job at a middle school in Long Beach.

BASEBALL

Former Mater Dei standout Pat Manning, The Times Orange County’s player of the year in 1999, was named the Gulf Coast Braves player of the year after hitting .422, with four home runs in 22 games.

Manning, a third-round selection, was promoted to Atlanta’s single-A affiliate in Macon, where he hit .259 with four home runs in 43 games.

Doug Deats has been named baseball coach at Estancia High.

Deats, who teaches at Costa Mesa High, replaces Tim Green, who resigned after compiling an 8-39 record in two seasons at Estancia.

Deats guided Costa Mesa to a 42-53 record from 1994-97.
