Northwood Beats Irvine in Tennis Debut

Northwood made its varsity debut in girls’ tennis Monday and beat rival Irvine, 10-8, in a nonleague match.
Freshman Gloria Lopez swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead visiting Northwood, which is made up of freshman and sophomore players.
The school’s other two varsity sports are cross-country and swimming.
Northwood’s Justine Chen and Christine McNeil won at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5.
In other nonleague girls’ tennis:
Bolsa Grande 14, Anaheim 4--Juniors Ahnthu Ha and Cheryl Lacson swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Bolsa Grande (4-1).
Edison 14, Calvary Chapel 4--Meghan Feichter swept in singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, for visiting Edison (3-2). Host Calvary Chapel is 4-1.
Esperanza 10, Ayala 8--Kelly Six swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, for host Esperanza (4-1). Six has lost only one set in her last five matches and is 14-1 this season.
Katella 11 1/2, Valencia 9 1/2--Jacque Ricohermoso swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1, for host Katella (3-2). Teammate Ana Waltz won, 7-6, 6-1, for the Knights.
La Habra 12, Kennedy 6--Mara Petrini swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host La Habra (4-0). Petrini, who is a freshman, hasn’t lost a game in her last two matches.
Los Amigos 15, Magnolia 3--Veronica Sommers, at No. 1 singles, won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 for Los Amigos (3-0). Magnolia is 4-1.
Sunny Hills 10, Garden Grove 8--Joanna Kao swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host Sunny Hills (3-1). Patti Kangwankij also won, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2, for the Lancers.
In girls’ golf:
Villa Park wins Estancia tournament--Junior Shelly Raworth shot a 75 to lead the Spartans on the par 70 Mesa Linda course in Costa Mesa. Villa Park finished with 245.
Courtney Goebel of Marina was the medalist with a 74 and helped the Vikings to a second-place finish, two shots behind Villa Park.
Woodbridge was third at 270.
In nonleague girls’ golf:
Fountain Valley 127, Santa Ana Valley 140--Minnie Choi finished with a 45 in Fountain Valley’s season opener at David L. Baker Golf Course.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Marina 3, Long Beach Millikan 1--Tiffany Skoug had 29 kills and April Pugliese had 44 assist to help Marina (2-1) win, 4-15, 15-11, 8-15, 15-13, 15-12.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
Fullerton 11, Loara 2--Sophomore Kory Kroh had four goals for visiting Fullerton (2-4).
