MOSCOW — A top Russian intelligence official said Monday that U.S. investigators have material suggesting that Russian businesses laundered money through the Bank of New York and promised cooperation with the FBI in following the paper trail, Russian news agencies reported.
Media reports that Russian officials may be involved in laundering up to $10 billion through the New York bank have intensified growing discontent with President Boris N. Yeltsin and the government three months before national parliamentary elections.
Viktor Ivanov, deputy head of the Federal Security Service, Russia’s main intelligence agency, said the U.S. investigators showed material indicating Russian businesses and banks may have laundered money in the U.S., the news agencies Interfax and ITAR-Tass reported.
Media reports have said the scandal could be one of the largest cases of money laundering ever uncovered in the United States.
