Carpinteria 29, Whittier Christian 13

Paced by the running and passing of quarterback Paul Hernandez, Carpinteria rolled at Santa Barbara City College.

Hernandez ran the Warriors’ option offense for 144 yards in 17 carries. His first run from scrimmage was up the middle for 54 yards and a touchdown. He completed 12 of 22 passes for 152 yards.

Carpinteria (2-0) took a 19-0 first-quarter lead. The Heralds (0-2) cut the lead to 19-13 in the second quarter when David Oldfield picked up a Warrior fumble and returned it for a 45-yard touchdown. With 1:07 remaining in the quarter, Josh Martinez scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

In the second half, Carpinteria’s defense stiffened, holding the Heralds’ offense to only eight yards rushing. The Warriors added 10 points of their own. Mike Lord rushed for 23 yards in nine carries for the Heralds.
