Down by six points early in the second quarter, the Trojans scored touchdowns on their next four possessions.
El Monte (1-1) took a 13-7 lead with 8 minutes 42 seconds left in the half, but the Trojans, on their next possession, drove 54 yards for a touchdown in 2:33 to take the lead for good.
Quarterback Pat Josten capped the drive with a five-yard run for the score. Zach Sherwood’s extra point made it 14-13 University.
From there, the University defense took over and the Trojan offense clicked nearly flawlessly.
With 3:27 left in the half, Josten found Ben Messelbeck open for a 29-yard touchdown pass.
After Arroyo went three plays and out, Colin Cavanaugh returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown to give University a 28-13 lead.
Midway through the second half, University (1-1) made the score 35-13 on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Josten to Jacque Newsome.
Josten finished with four touchdowns, one running and one passing. He completed seven of 10 passes for 163 yards.
