Seiko Epson’s Ink Jet Patents Upheld

A federal appeals court has confirmed the validity of several patents for ink jet cartridges belonging to Seiko Epson Corp. and its Epson America unit in Long Beach. Epson claimed inexpensive ink jet cartridges made by Dallas-based Nu-Kote Holdings and its manufacturing affiliate Pelikan Produktions violated Seiko’s patents. A federal judge in Los Angeles ruled in 1997 that several of Seiko’s patents were unenforceable, but an appeals panel overturned that decision last week. Epson said it would seek damages from Nu-Kote and Pelikan.
