Crews Battle Forest Fires Near Big Sur

Ten fires started by lightning in the Los Padres National Forest near Big Sur burned a total of 1,095 acres in rugged terrain accessible only from the air, officials said Sunday.
Eight of the fires, burning in the general area of the Ventana Wilderness, had been contained, but two were still growing Sunday night. One had reached 565 acres; the other, 186 acres, said forest spokeswoman Juanita Freel.
The fires started Wednesday after a series of lightning strikes. Oak, pine and some redwoods as well as sage and chaparral burned south of Big Sur.
No injuries or evacuations were reported.
Firefighters who were dropped into the steep area by parachute and repelled from helicopters were aided by at least 21 aircraft.
Authorities closed Nacimiento Road, which connects scenic California 1 and U.S. 101.
