July and August Were the Added Months

Re Martin Miller’s article on other cultures’ calendars (“For Many, New Year’s Is Double Date Night,” Sept. 5). Thank you for reminding us that the millennium is not an absolute fact for everyone in the world, including L.A. However, when describing the history of the Julian/Gregorian calendar, Mr. Miller implied that January and February were the added months when it was modified from 10- to the current 12-month cycle. I believe that those would actually be July and August, in honor of Roman emperors Julius and Augustus. (Proving yet again that it’s good to be king.)
