COLLEGE FOOTBALL / WEEK 3 : LEADING MEN
DREW BREES
Quarterback, Purdue
Brees moved past Jim Everett into third place on Purdue’s career list of touchdown passes and, more important, has yet to take a phantom sack.
Saturday: 24 for 40, 317 yards, 1 TD
Season: 50 for 83, 590 yards, 4 TD
Next: Saturday at Central Michigan
RON DAYNE
Running Back, Wisconsin
For those not interested in the Sosa-McGwire home run watch, here’s the Ron Dayne(Mark)-Ricky (Babe) Williams watch: Dayne reached the rushing yardage Saturday--158--that he needs to average in the Badgers’ final nine games to break Ricky Williams’ all-time record of 6,279.
Saturday: 31 carries, 158 yards, 1 TD
Season: 51 carries, 293 yards, 4 TD
Next: Saturday at Cincinnati
PETER WARRICK
Wide receiver, Florida State
Warning Seminole opponents: Keep track of Warrick at all times. He lined up at quarterback in the first quarter and the next thing Georgia Tech knew, he was in the end zone with a 17-yard touchdown.
Saturday: 8 catches, 142 yards, 1 TD
Season: 16 catches, 263 yards, 2 TD
Next: Saturday, North Carolina State
JARIOUS JACKSON
Quarterback, Notre Dame
Very un-Montana-like in Notre Dame loss: tackled for nine-yard loss with ball at the Purdue 2 on game’s last play; lined up under wrong lineman and couldn’t get off play with time running out in the first half and Irish in position to score. He’s also 0 for 2 against Big Ten.
Saturday: 22 for 34, 267 yards, 1 TD
Season: 49 for 80, 658 yards, 2 TD
Next: Saturday, Michigan State
Also seeking top billing: Shaun Alexander, running back, Alabama; Joe Hamilton, quarterback, Georgia Tech; J.R. Redmond, running back, Arizona State.
