VALLEY / VENTURA COUNTY SPORTS : SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : White Powers Valencia; Quarterback Injured
Manuel White rushed for 222 yards and two touchdowns in 28 carries to lead Valencia High past Highland, 27-13, in a nonleague season opener Friday night at Highland.
But the Vikings may have lost their starting quarterback in the process.
The game was delayed nearly 20 minutes in the third quarter after Zack Sapp injured his right leg while being tackled on an option play. The junior was examined by a doctor on the field and driven back to Santa Clarita for X-rays.
“We’re hoping it’s not broken,” Valencia Coach Brian Stiman said. “But if he’s out for the season, his teammates will go on.”
Kyle Bauer, a junior, replaced Sapp and engineered Valencia’s last scoring drive, a 13-play, 75-yard march capped by Bauer’s one-yard sneak. He threw a two-point conversion to Brian Miller to close out the scoring with 3:40 to play.
White, a 6-foot-3, 215-point senior who is being heavily recruited, scored on a five-yard run that completed an 11-play, 80-yard drive in the second quarter to give the Vikings a 13-0 lead. He also scored on a three-yard run in the third quarter.
Valencia, ranked seventh in Southern Section Division III, scored on its second play when Sapp connected with Pedro Fernando on an 81-yard pass play.
Jeremy White completed 10 of 23 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns for Highland.
