Manual Arts 34, Grant 16--Clinging to a 21-16 lead, Manual Arts earned some breathing room when Pompeii Thompson broke loose for an 88-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter at Grant.
Thompson, a senior playing his first varsity game, rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns in only six carries.
The Toilers finished with 215 yards rushing.
Perry Clayton of Grant rushed for 117 yards in 13 carries and had a 60-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Alfonso Estrada completed 11 of 24 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown, with one interception for Grant.
The Lancers led, 2-0, early in the second quarter when Thompson scored on a 58-yard run to give Manual Arts the lead for good.
Marco Acietuno, who threw for 28 touchdowns last season when the Toilers reached the City Division semifinals, completed 16 of 22 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns.
Manual Arts finished with 443 yards and Grant had 274.
