7:30 TONIGHT FRESNO BUCHANAN HIGH
The Spartans’ only loss last year was to Mater Dei, 21-14, with the winning touchdown coming on a blocked field-goal attempt. The ball landed in the arms of holder Scott Lukash, who ran in for a fourth-quarter score. Clovis West runs the wing-T offense and its backfield features three-fourths of the school’s 400-meter relay team. Clovis West’s strength is its defense, especially at linebacker and in the secondary. “I really think our defense is better than last year,” Coach Stan Kanawyer said. Clovis West, defending Central Section Division 4 champion, is No. 8 in the West Region in one ranking, which also lists Mater Dei No. 1 in the West and No. 4 nationally.
