Kelly Coburn passed for 161 yards and three touchdowns as Westminster defeated Bolsa Grande, 33-13, in a season opener Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.

The Lions, who led 33-0 at one point, overcame seven fumbles and 165 yards in penalties. After fumbling the ball away on its opening possession, Westminster scored on its next four possessions to take a 27-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

They drove 78 yards after blocking a field goal-attempt for their first score, a 31-yard pass from Coburn to Phillip Jenkins. Coburn’s other two touchdown tosses went to utility back Greg Laurel, who also scored once on the ground.

After being held to negative yardage through three quarters, and losing a fumble at Westminster’s one-yard line just before halftime, the Matadors got two fourth-quarter scores in a 19-second span. Defensive end An Ha stripped a Westminster ballcarrier and went 74 yards for a touchdown, then recovered another Lion fumble on their next play from scrimmage to set up another Bolsa score.

Bolsa Grande moved to the Westminster 34 on its final possession behind sophomore quarterback George Orozco, but turned the ball over on downs as the Matadors suffered their 17th consecutive loss.
