ORANGE COUNTY / PREP FOOTBALL : Edison Only Needs a Half to Set the Record Straight

Make no mistake, there is no comparison between the Empire and Sunset leagues.

Before Friday’s 62-14 victory over Cypress, Edison Coach Dave White talked about each school’s lot in life.

“We won last year’s game, 54-23, and we finished in last place [in the Sunset League] and they were league champs,” White said. “We came off a horrible year for Edison. It’s not like we have something to prove to Cypress, but something to prove to ourselves.”

The Chargers (2-0) took quite the step toward convincing themselves. They broke the school record for points scored in a game in the first half. The old record, 55, was set in the 1979 Big Five championship against Redlands.

Edison took a 34-0 lead in the first quarter, and held a 62-0 advantage at halftime. The Chargers were already into their bench. The first- and second-team junior varsity players played the second half.

“It was Murphy’s Law,” White said. “We couldn’t do anything wrong and they couldn’t do anything right. That was just about a perfect half.”

Daryl Poston went over 100 yards rushing on his first carry of the second quarter, a 12-yard run to give Edison a 41-0 lead.

Poston finished the half (and the game) with 13 rushes for 155 yards and touchdowns of 50, 12 and two yards.

Edison completed the half with a 330-29 edge in yardage, and finished with a 359-168 margin.

Marcus McCutcheon also scored three times--on a 43-yard reception, a five-yard run and a 30-yard interception return.

His interception for a touchdown to make it 34-0 followed a 62-yard interception by A.J. Martinez that made it 19-0.

“The first one took the wind out of their sails,” White said of Cypress. “The second one iced it.”

Cypress Coach Kerry Crabb complained that his team had lacked intensity in practices.

“We’ve been flat-lining the last 1 1/2 weeks,” Crabb said.

Richard Schwartz completed five of eight passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a 39-yarder to Jimmy Thorson. Steve Greyshock also scored for Edison (2-0) on a one-yard run.

Darren Shorter rushed 22 times for 129 yards for Cypress (0-1), and scored on runs of 11 and 12 yards in the third quarter.
