PREP FOOTBALL / NORTH COUNTY ROUNDUP
Sunny Hills 28, Baldwin Park Sierra Vista 12--Running back Brandon Shepard’s impressive debut for the Lancers included 124 yards rushing and two touchdowns at Buena Park High.
Shepard, a 5-foot-10 transfer from Cerritos Gahr, where he ran for 1,019 yards and nine touchdowns last season, also returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter to give Sunny Hills a 14-0 lead.
With 1 minute 54 seconds left in the half, Shepard returned another punt 73 yards into the end zone. However, Sunny Hills (1-0) was called for clipping and Shepard’s touchdown was nullified.
Shepard’s second touchdown of the game came on a six-yard run midway through the third quarter, capping an eight-play, 67-yard scoring drive.
“I’m not surprised at all,” said Tim Brogden, Sunny Hills’ first-year coach who was Shepard’s coach last year at Gahr. “[Shepard] was spinning and turning all night long. He has a great work ethic and determined heart. Everyone in the country is after this kid.”
