Marina 28, Corona del Mar 7--Inside, outside, all over the opposing quarterback. That plan worked to near-perfection for the Vikings, who got 178 yards of rushing from bruising senior tailback Ray Mietkiewicz, mixed in some electrifying speed around the flanks and sacked Sea King quarterback Matt Moore seven times in winning the teams’ season opener before about 750 at Newport Harbor High.

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Mietkiewicz, who rushed for 1,544 yards last year, tops among 1999 returning players in Orange County, averaged 8.1 yards in his 22 carries Thursday and scored touchdowns on runs of two and 54 yards.

Junior quarterback Beau Brown, returning to the team after sitting out last season, broke a 55-yard touchdown run around right end in the third quarter, which helped make up for his four fumbles.

“We can attack inside and outside,” Marina Coach Mark Rehling said. “We have some good perimeter speed.”

The Marina defense held the Sea Kings to 101 yards and scored twice on safeties, one on a punt snap out of the end zone, the other on a sack. Senior linebacker Kyle Warren led the assault on Moore, accounting for three of the seven sacks.

“We could have had Jerry Rice out there and we wouldn’t have been able to throw,” Corona del Mar Coach Dick Freeman said. “We gave [Moore] zero protection.”
