SPORTS WEEKEND : WEEK 3 PRIMER : THE LOCALS : No. 14 UCLA (1-0) at No. 13 OHIO STATE (0-1)
* Kickoff: 5 p.m. PDT Saturday at Ohio Stadium, Columbus.
* Story line: The tradition-filled programs meet for the eighth time and the first since 1980, which is also the last time UCLA played in the venerable Horseshoe. The home-and-home arrangement concludes Sept. 22, 2001, at the Rose Bowl. Both teams are looking for significant improvement from their openers. The Bruins got away with it last week because they played Boise State, the Buckeyes didn’t on Aug. 29 because they played Miami.
* UCLA update: Sixteen Bruins made their first college starts last week: eight on offense, six on defense and the kicker and punter. Eighteen players made their college debuts in some capacity, 12 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen. This week, defensive back Audie Attar plays for the first time.
* Ohio State update: The Buckeyes are trying to avoid their first 0-2 start since 1986, when they also opened with a loss in the Kickoff Classic and played a Pacific 10 team (Washington) about two weeks later. That club came back to finish 10-3 and win a share of the Big Ten title. Ohio State has not lost a home opener since 1978.
* Edge to Ohio State: The Bruins at full strength would have been a different story.
* Line: Ohio State by 10.
