CALIFORNIA : SOUTHLAND FOCUS : New Area Codes Planned for 626, 949 Regions
Government officials have begun planning for new area codes in early 2002 for the regions served by the 626 area code in Los Angeles County and the 949 area code in Orange County. The announcement sets in motion a 30-month planning process that will include industry recommendations and public hearings during the next nine months, then a review by the California Public Utilities Commission. In the meantime, state and federal regulators are considering changes that could delay or prevent the need for these and other new codes. The 626 area code covers the San Gabriel Valley, including Alhambra, Pasadena and Irwindale. The 949 code covers south Orange County.
