College Football Daily Report / AROUND THE NATION : Holtz Sees Need for More Intensity

Associated Press

A day after South Carolina was shut out by North Carolina State, 10-0, amid heavy rain at Raleigh, N.C., new Coach Lou Holtz, known for his intensity, saw one problem.

“I don’t think I’ve been as intense as I used to be, and I think maybe I need to be,” he said.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s a start,” the 62-year-old Holtz said. “I’m proud of my team. Right down to the last second, we felt we could win it.”

Holtz wasn’t the only new coach in the state of South Carolina to lose in his debut. Tommy Bowden, who was 12-0 at Tulane last season, is 0-1 at Clemson after the Tigers fell to Marshall, 13-10.

Colorado’s Gary Barnett also received a gut check in Denver. In Saturday’s biggest stunner, rival Colorado State shocked the 14th-ranked Buffaloes, 41-14.

“We didn’t make plays. We couldn’t run the ball. Field position really hurt us,” Barnett said after his Buffaloes committed six turnovers and allowed nine sacks. “They got the momentum and we never really got it back. But there’s a lot of football left to play this season.”

Two college games will be played today, highlighted by No. 25 Arizona State playing host to Texas Tech at Tempe, Ariz., in a 5 p.m. game that will be televised by Fox Sports Net and carried in Los Angeles on Fox Sports West 2.

The game features running backs J.R. Redmond of Arizona State and Ricky Williams of Texas Tech. Both are considered Heisman Trophy candidates.

Williams ran for 1,582 yards and 13 touchdowns last year and has some name recognition, but for the wrong reasons. Last year, he shared headlines with Ricky Williams of Texas, who went on to win the Heisman.

Redmond had more modest numbers for the Sun Devils--883 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing--while missing all or part of three games because of ankle injuries.

The other game today is Tulane at Southern Mississippi at noon PDT, which can be seen on Fox Sports West.
