Nation IN BRIEF: NEW YORK : Bacteria Outbreak Traced to Water
- Share via
A contaminated underground water source is believed to be the origin of an E. coli outbreak at the Washington County, N.Y., fair that killed a 3-year-old girl and sickened 118 other people, state Health Department officials said. Tests of water in an aquifer supplying the fairgrounds turned up high levels of the E. coli bacteria. A total of 118 people, mostly children, have been treated at hospitals in New York and Vermont since Friday and at least 41 remained hospitalized, according to the health department. All visited the fair, about 35 miles north of Albany, on either Aug. 28 or 29. E. coli bacteria normally live in the intestines of humans and other warmblooded animals. Most strains are harmless but some can be deadly.
