The countdown to 2000 is 117 days; Dayne’s countdown to break Ricky Williams’ NCAA career rushing record is 1,582 yards after he got 135 in only one half’s work against Murray State. Dayne passed five players--including Marcus Allen and Marshall Faulk--to move to No. 14 on the all-time list.

TRAVIS PRENTICE

Running Back, Miami of Ohio

Prentice is also in pursuit of a Ricky Williams’ record for career rushing touchdowns. He scored two touchdowns against Northwestern--yes, they count--to move past Faulk into third place on the all-time list. Prentice has 58 career touchdowns--14 behind Williams, who might only have that wedding gown from that bizarre magazine shoot left to his name by the time the season’s over.

JARIOUS JACKSON

Quarterback, Notre Dame

Jackson, who passed for a career-high 302 yards, had the touch of Joe Montana--and the luck of Gerry Faust on what could have been a last-minute game-winning drive against Michigan. Receiver Raki Nelson was stopped inches short of a first down at the Wolverine 12 that would have given Jackson one last shot at the end zone. Instead time ran out.

Central Florida had 12 men on the field in the second quarter and still couldn’t prevent Brees from throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tim Stratton. And Kevin Garnett thinks defenses are stacked against him.
