PEPPERDINE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Melissa Plass of Fountain Valley High, Julie Hinsche of Huntington Beach High.

* Worth noting: Plass was the starting setter last season as a freshman. Hinsche, a junior, was fifth on the team in blocks with 45.

* Appearing locally: The Waves will play at defending national champion Long Beach State at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7.

MASSACHUSETTS WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Kari Hogancamp of Edison High, Jill Meyers of Huntington Beach High.

* Worth noting: Meyers, a senior, led the team in kills last season with 441 and blocks with 83. Hogancamp, also a senior, led the team in digs with 462.

ARIZONA STATE FOOTBALL

* County connections: Wide receiver Brian Forth and cornerback Kareem Clark, both of Esperanza; quarterback John Leonard of Mater Dei, safety Alfred Williams of Irvine High and defensive tackle Ryan Reilly of Valencia High.

* Worth noting: Reilly is a returning starter at defensive tackle, and Williams is expected to be one of the team’s top defensive backs.

* Appearing locally: The Sun Devils will play at USC on Nov. 6.

CALIFORNIA FOOTBALL

* County connections: Reed Diehl of Mater Dei, Adam Fisher of Huntington Beach High and Nick Schaeffer of Woodbridge High. All are offensive linemen.

* Worth noting: Diehl, a junior, is expected to be the starter at left tackle.

* Appearing locally: California plays at UCLA on Oct. 16.
