OUTLOOK

Irvine reached the Division VI semifinals before losing, 17-0, to Santa Margarita, a team it had demolished a few weeks earlier. Ricci, at 5-8, will be the shortest quarterback to play for Henigan, but also one of his most well-trained. Henigan pointed to Ricci’s successive records of 9-1, 8-2 and 9-0-1 on lower-level teams. Irvine is replacing 42 seniors, and both sides of the line are inexperienced. However, Henigan says his skilled athletes are as good as Irvine has had, especially Whitted, Sinner and Patton. Add Keith Short, a transfer from Calvary Chapel (along with his brother, Josh), to the mix and there’s reason for the Vaqueros’ optimism.
