A LITTLE HISTORY

With The Times All-Orange County football team marking its 40th anniversary this season, here is a selection of prominent all-county choices from Freeway League schools:

Gary Carter

Sunny Hills, 1970

Before he was a catcher with the Expos, Mets and Dodgers, Carter was a triple-threat quarterback for the Lancers. He gained 1,648 yards in total offense as a senior, passing for seven touchdowns and running for nine. He also had a 43.5-yard punting average.

Mike Pawlawski

Troy, 1986

Named to the team as a defensive back after intercepting seven passes, Pawlawski also passed for 14 touchdowns and went on to star for California at quarterback. He led Albany to the Arena Football title this summer, passing for seven touchdowns in the championship game.

D.C. Olsen

Fullerton, 1990

Better known as a power-hitting first baseman who later helped Cal State Fullerton to a national championship, Olsen also starred at linebacker. He was in on 126 tackles as a senior.

1998 IN REVIEW

The League Race: Fullerton opened league play with four consecutive victories--allowing only one touchdown during a three-game stretch--to clinch a tie for the championship, but had to share the title with Sunny Hills after being upset by Buena Park, 24-17, during the regular season’s final week.

Game of the Year: Modesto Paz’s 36-yard field goal with 42 seconds to play capped an 11-play, five-minute drive that snapped a tie and gave Fullerton a 24-21 victory over Sunny Hills in a league opener. Johnathan Pate rushed for 169 yards on 21 carries for the Indians and scored two touchdowns.

Play of the Year: Andrew Tindukasiri’s 18-yard run on a fourth-and-one play near midfield with 1:34 to play allowed Sunny Hills to hold on for a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Troy in the season finale. The result gave Sunny Hills a share of the league title--its sixth of the 1990s--and kept Troy out of the playoffs.

The MVP: Pate, the all-purpose quarterback from Fullerton, completed 56 percent of his passes and averaged 149 yards of total offense.

Playoff performance: Fullerton had the league’s lone victory in Division IX, surprising La Quinta, 43-27, in the first round before falling to Brea Olinda, 26-21. Sunny Hills and Buena Park were first-round losers.
