A LITTLE HISTORY

With The Times All-Orange County football team marking its 40th anniversary this season, here is a selection of prominent all-county choices from Century League schools:

Garry Templeton

Santa Ana Valley, 1972-73

With Myron White breaking rushing records and Templeton intercepting 15 passes in two seasons, few schools could match the backfield talent of the Falcons in the early ‘70s. But Templeton went on to greater fame in another sport. He batted .271 during a 16-year major league career as a shortstop with the Cardinals, Padres and Mets.

Don Gibson

El Modena, 1985

One of three brothers to be named to all-county teams, the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Gibson was the county’s lineman of the year as a senior. That capped a three-year career in which he helped the Vanguards to a 36-5 record and two Southern Section titles. He then started for four years on defense at USC and was named a team captain as a senior.

Scott Strini

Orange, 1989

When Orange, one of the county’s oldest schools, played for the Southern Section Division VIII championship to end a 60-year title game drought, Strini was the defensive leader. The linebacker averaged five tackles and three passes broken up per game. The Panthers couldn’t get past Trabuco Hills in the championship game, however, losing, 13-7.

1998 IN REVIEW

The League Race: After forfeiting three nonleague victories, Villa Park won the first outright championship in school history. The Spartans rolled past runner-up Foothill, 59-25, during the seventh week behind Dache Dameron’s 138 yards rushing and two touchdown.

Game of the Year: Nick Busciglio scored on a four-yard run with 1:18 to play, capping Villa Park’s comeback from a 14-point deficit in the final four minutes to tie El Modena, 28-28, in the eighth week.

Play of the Year: With Canyon trailing El Modena by a point, the Comanches’ Jerod Bauer hit Marc Rodriguez streaking down the right sideline on a 68-yard touchdown pass with 1:16 to play, for a 25-18 victory over the Vanguards in the ninth week.

The MVP: Ian Souza, El Modena’s standout linebacker and multipurpose running back.

Playoff performance: Villa Park had the league’s lone victory, a 41-14 decision over El Dorado before being eliminated by Servite in Division VI. Foothill and Canyon lost in the first round by a combined score of 103-41.
