Schquay Brignac, two-time City Section champion in the girls’ high jump for Cleveland High, will start classes at Taft High next week but won’t compete for the Woodland Hills school in any sport.
Brignac, who will be a junior when the fall semester begins Wednesday, said she wouldn’t be comfortable playing basketball or competing in track against her former teammates.
“I just couldn’t see myself competing against my old school,” Brignac said. “I wouldn’t enjoy that. It’s not that I have anything against Taft, but it wouldn’t feel right to compete against Cleveland.
“I’ve been around that school for a long time and I went there for two years.”
Brignac did not give a reason for the transfer but her mother Janice was upset when Schquay was academically ineligible part of last year.
Brignac, who won intermediate girls’ high jump titles in the USA Track & Field Youth Championships in July and in the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics in August, will continue to compete for the West Valley Eagles track club.
