World IN BRIEF / EUROPE : 5.8 Million Beer Bottles Recalled
Anheuser-Busch Cos., the world’s largest brewer, said it recalled 5.8 million twist-off bottles of Budweiser in 12 European countries, adding to a summer of food and drink health scares across Europe. Pieces of glass could break off from the misshapen rims of bottles improperly made at plants in Spain and Portugal, although the beer inside is fine, St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch said. Reminiscent of a massive June recall of soft drinks by Coca-Cola Co. in four Western European nations, Anheuser-Busch said it issued the recall after receiving consumer complaints. All twist-off top bottles in Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Cyprus, Malta, Belgium, the Netherlands, Latvia, Germany and Switzerland were recalled, as well as many bottles in France, the company said.
