Despite dire predictions of contaminated ooze floating down to Newport, so far the Labor Day weekend waters appear clean, authorities said.
“The south swell has pushed the water and surf up the coast” toward Huntington, said Jim Turner at lifeguard headquarters. And while the currents could still change, he said, it would not happen as quickly as this weekend. This news is welcome relief for businesses and the tourist bureau in Newport, which view Labor Day as “the last hurrah of the summer,” said Rosalind Williams, president of the Newport Beach conference and visitors bureau.
