The City Council Downtown Committee ran into a constitutional wall last week in trying to ban music that officials deem vulgar.
After a resident complained about hearing songs laced with profanity at various entertainment events near Main Street, City Councilman and committee member Dave Garofalo asked staff at last month’s meeting whether certain lyrics can be prohibited by the city.
The 1st Amendment blocks the city from banning what may be considered offensive music during performances on private property, Deputy City Atty. Sara Lazarus said.
