CAMARILLO — In one of the largest charitable gifts in county history, Oxnard rancher and philanthropist John S. Broome has donated $5 million to help establish a new library at Ventura County’s emerging state university.
The gift will lay the groundwork for building a state-of-the-art library at the new Cal State Channel Islands campus, which is being reconstructed from the former state mental health hospital in Camarillo.
University trustees later this month will consider a recommendation to name the library after Broome, a longtime vegetable farmer whose family has lived in Ventura County for generations.
“The gift speaks for itself,” Channel Islands President Handel Evans said Tuesday.
