Whieldon, Lancers Roll Past the Heralds
Jason Whieldon passed for four touchdowns and set a school single-game record for total offense as fourth-ranked Orange Lutheran remained unbeaten by defeating Whittier Christian, 45-20, in an Olympic League football game Saturday at Brea Olinda High School.
Whieldon completed 16 of 23 passes for 288 yards and had 92 yards rushing. His 380 yards in total offense surpassed by 40 yards the school record he set in 1997.
Orange Lutheran (8-0, 3-0) took a 21-0 first-quarter lead by scoring three times in a six-minute span during which the Whittier Christian offense never got the ball.
Matt Staake, who fumbled out of the end zone for a touchback on the opening drive, scored from the two to cap a 78-yard, eight-play drive midway through the first quarter.
After Orange Lutheran recovered an onside kick, Ryan Nath scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Whieldon. Whittier Christian (1-7, 1-2) fumbled the next kickoff to set up the third touchdown, with Whieldon scoring from the one-yard line with 31 seconds left in the first quarter.
Nath scored on a 30-yard pass from Whieldon in the second quarter, and Jon Talmage’s 25-yard field goal gave the Lancers a 31-0 halftime lead.
Orange Lutheran dominated the first half, outgaining the Heralds, 342-1.
Whieldon threw two more touchdown passes in the third quarter to give him 30 for the season, against only two interceptions.
With his team trailing, 45-0, Whittier Christian’s Abraham Santos threw touchdown passes of 29, 23 and 27 yards in the fourth quarter.
