Saving Swimmers From Pollution

* When Huntington Beach closed this past summer, they wisely strung bright yellow caution tape between lifeguard stands.

This plastic barrier kept observers from going near even the wet sand.

As a coffee filter traps small particles, sand traps and encapsulates toxins and pathogens. Osmosis allows a certain movement that must be avoided.

If, as scientists say, certain viruses can live up to 90 days in saltwater above 59 degrees (hepatitis being one), why are there no laws prohibiting people from entering said waters?

Traffic signals, health codes, etc., are in place to protect us from one another. Even helmet laws help protect people from themselves.

While we try to deal with urban runoff and its overwhelming effects, let’s use some common sense and sensible restraints.

New laws that protect not only the individual but the greater health and safety of our citizens would be a welcome addition to a growing anxiety about pollution.
