Fire at Deserted Church Is Under Investigation
Investigators are searching for the cause of a fire that damaged an empty church early Saturday evening in the 4700 block of South Arlington Avenue in Hyde Park.
The fire at Emmanuel Baptist Church started near a stairwell about 7:15 p.m., and spread quickly before it was extinguished at 7:40 p.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.
According to preliminary estimates, the church suffered between $20,000 and $40,000 in damages. “There was extensive smoke damage,” Wells said. “Fire damaged the stairwell and the walls.”
About 40 firefighters from eight companies responded to the scene.
