Los Amigos built a 20-0 lead and overcame its mistakes, as well as a tenacious Bolsa Grande team, to earn a 20-7 victory over the Matadors Thursday at Bolsa Grande High.
The Lobos (3-4 overall, 3-1 in league), who put themselves in position to take the third playoff spot from the Garden Grove League, scored on their first play from scrimmage. Aoatoa Sualua ripped off a 71-yard run after breaking a tackle in the backfield. Los Amigos added two more scores before the end of the first quarter, getting a 32-yard field goal from Victor Estrada and a one-yard scoring run from Sualua to build a 17-0 advantage.
Los Amigos squandered a chance to increase the lead in the second period when Tui Soifua fumbled at the end of a 58-yard run, but upped the lead to 20-0 on another field goal by Estrada in the closing seconds.
Bolsa Grande (1-6, 1-2) didn’t play like a team that lost 21 straight games before last week. The Matadors narrowed the gap to 20-7 with a 26-yard touchdown pass from George Orozco to tight end Michael Heredia in the final minute of the third quarter, but lost a fumble inside the Lobo 6 on their next possession.
Los Amigos had 142 yards in penalties. Four of the Lobos’ six turnovers were in the final quarter.
