Turmoil in L.A. Schools
“I can foresee the Los Angeles Unified School District being broken up into smaller districts” is the quote from Frank del Olmo’s Oct. 17 commentary that causes me to wonder. When district officials have so badly managed current affairs, why do they fight to prevent legitimate attempts by communities to take control of their local schools and why would this be so bad?

Re LAUSD Supt. Ruben Zacarias and newly appointed CEO Howard Miller: I used to think that any good school could teach any American. Obviously I didn’t understand the importance of cultural integrity and ethnicity. I demand that the local districts be broken up so that my children and grandchildren can be taught in a Norwegian school with a Norwegian superintendent so that they can maintain their heritage. Of course, my wife wants her children taught in a German school with a German superintendent.
Do you think we have a problem?

When opponents of Zacarias’ ouster held a demonstration Monday, many of them dragged little children to it in the hot sun and made them hold signs that they were too young to even read, let alone understand. In addition, a leader of the group bragged that they were ready to keep their children out of school to protest the school board’s action.
These parents are so anxious to make a political point that they will abuse their children and sacrifice their education. They should be ashamed of themselves!
