Corona del Mar Edges Laguna Beach in Tennis

Leslie Damion won her final set in a tiebreaker, leading visiting Corona del Mar to a victory in games, 80-76, over Laguna Beach in a Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis match.

Damion’s final-set victory tied the score at 9-9, giving sixth-ranked Corona del Mar (9-5, 6-0) the victory. Anne Yelsey led the Sea Kings in singles, winning 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Seventh-ranked Laguna Beach fell to 7-7, 4-2.

In the Century League:

Canyon 15, Orange 3--Heather Hohenstein and Nicole Sadler each swept to remain undefeated in league singles play for host Canyon (8-6, 4-2). Hohenstein won 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, and Sadler won 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 14 1/2, Katella 6 1/2--Samantha Waller didn’t lose a game in singles and improving her season single’s record to 36-1 for Cypress (12-3, 7-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 12, La Habra 6--Sophomore Natalie Sargsian won 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, to lead host Sonora (8-6, 4-2).

No. 8 Troy 12, No. 9 Sunny Hills 6--Lori Judd and Stacey Lee won 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, in doubles, to lead Troy (11-2, 6-0). Joanna Kao swept in singles for Sunny Hills (8-5, 4-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 12, Bolsa Grande 6--Kim Tran didn’t lose a game in singles for Pacifica (9-2, 7-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 12 1/2, Western 8 1/2--The Wildcats, the first-place team in league, defeated Western for the second time this season. Kelly Scanlan and Annie James swept their singles and doubles matches for Brea Olinda (14-3, 7-0).

Anaheim 12, Magnolia 9--Evelyn Islas won her two singles sets, 6-0, 6-1 and won doubles with partner Brenda Gallardo, 6-1, leading Anaheim (1-14, 1-6) to its first victory.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 12, Calvary Chapel 6--Kristen Boenau won in singles 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to lead Orange Lutheran (12-1, 10-1). Orange Lutheran will attempt to clinch the league championship and avenge its only loss of the year Thursday when they play St. Margaret’s.

St. Margaret’s 16, Connelly 2--Sophomore Brianna Ondryas lost only three games leading St. Margaret’s (13-3, 10-1) to its sixth consecutive victory.

In the Sea View League:

No. 2 Woodbridge 12, Laguna Hills 6--Elizabeth Exon and Adriana Hockicko swept their singles sets, losing just seven games between them to lead Woodbridge (12-3, 4-1) to victory.

In the Serra League:

No. 3 Mater Dei 14, Rosary 4--Melissa Esmero and Mary Hung combined in doubles play to sweep 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, leading visiting Mater Dei (11-2, 5-0).

No. 10 Santa Margarita 17, Lakewood St. Joseph 1--No. 1 singles player Erin Miller swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead host Santa Margarita (9-4, 4-1).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 9, Marina 9 (Edison wins on games, 84-77)--Megan Feldmar and Meghan Feichter won 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, in doubles, leading host Edison (10-5, 4-2).

Esperanza 10, Los Alamitos 8--No. 1 doubles Jenny Grob and Christine Pham swept 7-5, 6-2, 7-5, to lead visiting Esperanza (13-2, 5-1).

In Sunset League field hockey:

Fountain Valley 2, Santa Ana 0--Katlin Frizelle scored both goals to lead visiting Fountain Valley (6-3-2). Santa Ana fell to 3-5-2.

Huntington Beach 4, La Verne Bonita 0--Heather Cowie scored two goals to lead host Huntington Beach (6-2-3). Rona Smith had six saves for the Oilers, including a saved penalty shot.

In Sea View League golf:

No. 2 Newport Harbor 121, Irvine 124--Sophomore Kelly Hunt shot par 36, rolling in two birdies and five pars for Newport Harbor (12-0, 6-0) at Oak Creek.

Junior Stella Lee medaled for Irvine (5-6, 1-5), shooting one-under, and made an eagle on the 300-yard par-four fifth hole.

No. 8 Woodbridge 125, Aliso Niguel 148--Channing Lovejoy was medalist, shooting a one-over 37, to lead visiting Woodbridge (11-2, 5-1) at Aliso Viejo.

In the Sunset League:

No. 5 Marina 107, Fountain Valley 118--Courtney Goebel had eight pars and one bogey to lead Marina (12-3, 6-1) with a one-over-par 32 at Baker. Fountain Valley is 2-6, 1-6.

No. 4 Esperanza 135, Huntington Beach 152--Kayley Parrett had five pars and sank a 35-foot putt to save par on the fourth hole, shooting a six-over-par 39 at Fullerton Municipal.

In Empire League water polo:

Katella 11, Cypress 8--Brian Zuniga scored five goals and Dan Flude had three to lead host Katella (9-8, 2-1).

Cypress dropped to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in league.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 4, Westminster 3--Jon Rosen scored the game-winner early in the fourth quarter for Ocean View (4-8, 1-2). The Sea Hawks had to survive a six-on-five situation the last 35 seconds of the game to secure the win. Steward Bounds scored three goals for Ocean View.

In nonleague water polo:

Mater Dei 9, Lakewood 8--Sammy Barker scored five goals to lead visiting Mater Dei (9-11), which held off a late rally by Lakewood, which scored three goals in the fourth quarter.

No. 6 Villa Park 22, Mission Viejo 2--Charlie Fisher scored eight goals and T.J. Matijevich had five to lead visiting Villa Park (12-5).

No. 3 El Toro 7, No. 5 Servite 6--Trevor McNunn and Brett McCleave each scored two goals to lead host El Toro (20-3). Dane Jensen had three goals for Servite (13-4).
