Guard in Armored Truck Shot in Robbery Attempt
LONG BEACH — An armored truck guard was shot in the head and upper body during a robbery attempt Tuesday morning outside a Farmers & Merchants Bank.
The guard, Dwight Medrando, 24, of Whittier, is in the intensive care unit at a local hospital, authorities said.
He was shot at about 10:20 a.m. at 315 Pine Ave., said Long Beach police Sgt. Steve Filippini.
Three to four men ran into the parking structure of the nearly abandoned Long Beach Plaza mall after the crime, authorities said. The Long Beach Police Department’s SWAT team searched for several hours before abandoning the effort.
Police searched an area between 3rd Street on the south, 6th street on the north, Long Beach Boulevard on the east and Pacific Avenue on the west.
It was unknown whether the suspects fled with any money. Detectives were still gathering witness statements and reviewing them late Tuesday night.
Anyone with further information about the case is asked to call Long Beach homicide detectives at 562-570-7244.
