Associated Press
MINSK, Belarus — Baton-wielding police clashed with 5,000 demonstrators Sunday in the Belarussian capital.
Forty-seven officers were injured and about 200 demonstrators detained, the Itar-Tass news agency reported, citing activists.
The violence followed a rally of 20,000 people called to oppose President Alexander G. Lukashenko’s push to unify Belarus and Russia, and to protest the disappearance of opposition figures. It was the largest protest in Belarus since 1996.
