Crescenta Wears Out Burroughs

BURBANK —  Crescenta Valley and Burroughs Highs combined for more than 900 yards in offense, 200 yards in penalties and more bizarre plays than a new-age drama troupe.

In the end, the three-hour epic added to an entertaining 55-28 nonleague victory for Crescenta Valley on Friday night at Burroughs.

“That seemed like the longest game I’ve ever been a part of,” said Coach Alan Eberhart of Crescenta Valley. “What a weird game.”

Crescenta Valley (4-1) won by four touchdowns yet was outgained, 473-469.

The Falcons’ leading rusher was Steve Carballo, their senior receiver.

He ran for 100 yards and a touchdown in eight carries and caught six passes for 125 yards and another score. He had two touchdowns called back because of penalties.

Wes Jones added 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns and connected with Jason Burkhart for a 20-yard halfback pass for a touchdown.

The Falcons’ victory overshadowed a breakout performance by senior Joe Kroells of Burroughs, who had passed for only 463 yards through four games after throwing for 2,155 as a junior.

He completed 24 of 39 passes for 339 yards but had three passes intercepted.

Keith Jarbo had 11 catches for 132 yards and Randy Beckmann had five receptions for 107 yards.

Jarbo also has his fifth pass intercepted and Beckmann picked off his fourth for the Indians (2-3), who have lost to traditional powers Notre Dame, Newbury Park and Crescenta Valley.

Michael Perez of Burroughs rushed for 96 yards in 16 carries and scored on a 43-yard run.

Kroells had touchdown runs of three and 12 yards, and Beckmann added a two-yard scoring run.

Steve Rigamat of Crescenta Valley turned in the most unusual play of the game, stripping Jarbo of the ball at the Crescenta Valley 30 and returning it 50 yards to the Indians’ 20. When met by a defender, he pitched it to Jared Salisbury, who took it the rest of the way for a touchdown.

Scott Vossmeyer of Crescenta Valley completed 12 of 21 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Jason Hogan had five catches for 81 yards and also scored on a 36-yard run.

The teams combined for 48 points in the fourth quarter.
