David DeLeon, third-string quarterback at Granada Hills, didn’t take a snap last week during practice but found himself playing against Jefferson because of injuries to Jason Winn and Bobby Baca.
“The first play of his life was from the one-yard line,” co-Coach Tom Harp said. “We were having nightmares he was going to fumble [the snap]. It was nuts.”
On one play, DeLeon pitched the ball to the fullback when it was supposed to go to the tailback.
Baca had to come out because of a concussion. How did the Highlanders know Baca wasn’t thinking straight? Because Baca kept asking in the huddle, “Why isn’t Winn in?”
Winn is out with a knee injury and isn’t expected back this week against Kennedy. DeLeon is the likely starter.

Irene Flores, a 5-7, 170-pound guard and defensive tackle, has become the first girl to play a position other than kicker for North Hollywood.
She played the last seven minutes against Wilson on Friday.
“She’s not a girl on the football team any longer,” Coach Jason Garrison said. “She’s made herself a football player.”
