Emergency Declared as Floods Kill 49
Mexico declared a state of emergency in four states amid flooding that has killed at least 49 people and forced the evacuation of more than 100,000 others. Mudslides and flooding in Puebla state killed at least 26 people, officials said. Four flood-related deaths were reported in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco, and at least 17 people have died in neighboring Veracruz state. In the southern state of Chiapas, two elderly men drowned while trying to cross a flooded river on horseback while drunk, officials said. Besides Tabasco, officials declared a state of emergency in the Pacific states of Michoacan and Jalisco and the central state of Puebla. Authorities have also urged residents to leave low-lying areas.
