Portland State Drops Montana in Overtime
Portland State blocked an extra-point attempt in overtime and Tanner Cole returned it for two points to defeat Montana, 51-48, in a Big Sky Conference game Saturday night at Portland.
The Vikings (4-1, 3-0 in Big Sky play) took sole possession of first place in the conference. Montana, the defending champion, dropped to 3-1, 2-1.
Dan Frantz of Portland State tied the score, 42-42, with a 26-yard field goal with 1:17 to play in regulation and Jimmy Blanchard connected with Terry Charles on a 25-yard pass in overtime to put the Vikings ahead, 49-42.
Drew Miller and Jimmy Farris hooked up on a 28-yard pass on Montana’s second play in overtime but the Vikings blocked Kris Heppner’s kick.
Blanchard completed 28 of 47 passes for 550 yards and three touchdowns, and Miller was 36 of 52 for 498 yards and five touchdowns. Charles had 12 receptions for 276 yards and two scores.
Eastern Washington 14, Northern Arizona 10--Jovan Griffith of Eastern Washington rushed for 142 yards in 16 carries and Dan Curley caught a 23-yard touchdown pass for the go-ahead score at Flagstaff, Ariz.
Eastern Washington (3-2, 2-1) set up the winning score with its fourth interception, this one by safety Julian Williams at Northern Arizona’s 35.
Northern Arizona (2-2, 0-1) took a 10-0 lead on Ty Dondelinger’s 23-yard field goal with 9:21 left in the first quarter and Travis Brown’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Trent Lundin 7:13 later.
Jesse Chatman’s one-yard plunge got Eastern Washington on the board with 14:12 to play in the first half.
Weber State 52, Cal State Sacramento 49--Cole Cooper threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Phil Hazel with 1:01 remaining to lift the Wildcats at Ogden, Utah.
Keenan Gordan sealed the victory with his third interception, at Weber State’s 11 as time expired.
Ricky Ray threw a 33-yard pass to Gary Austin and scored on a six-yard run to give Sacramento a 49-45 lead with 3:46 remaining.
Derek Poole of Weber State (3-2, 2-1) rushed for 205 yards and one touchdown, and Morgan Welch rushed for 67 yards and scored on runs of two, 20 and two yards.
Charles Roberts, the leading rusher in Division I-AA, had 220 yards and two touchdowns in 27 carries for the Hornets, who jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Weber State led, 28-21, at halftime after scoring twice in a 10-second span in the last minute of the first half.
