Garden Grove Makes Quick Work of La Quinta
The Garden Grove League football opener between Garden Grove and La Quinta on Friday started about 15 minutes late while officials waited for a doctor to arrive at Bolsa Grande High.
La Quinta was fortunate it didn’t need one while absorbing a 48-0 defeat at the hands of the visiting Argonauts.
Garden Grove (2-2, 1-0) piled up 382 yards en route to a 42-0 halftime lead. The Argonauts finished with 503 yards, all on the ground, despite the final quarter being played with a running clock. Bryan Loken scored first-quarter touchdowns on runs of 23 and 80 yards off the right side and finished with 158 yards.
Quarterback Matt Crippen also provided two touchdown runs, scoring from 49 yards in the first quarter and breaking several tackles on a 28-yard run in the second. Sterling Trotter had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown nullified due to a clip, but Trotter made his mark by scoring on his next two carries on runs of 26 and 38 yards.
La Quinta managed only 56 yards, 54 of them in the first quarter, and did not make a first down in the final 38 minutes of the game.
The Argonauts have moved into a position to battle for a playoff berth with the victory, while La Quinta (0-4, 0-1) can look forward to their game with Bolsa Grande (0-4, 0-0) in two weeks.
