La Canada Has a Shot but Falls to El Toro, 6-5
After failing to convert a penalty shot in the final minute, La Canada High allowed El Toro to score the winning goal on the subsequent possession for a 6-5 victory Thursday in a second-round game of the Villa Park water polo tournament.
La Canada (9-2), top-ranked in Division III, held the lead after each of the first three quarters, including a 4-2 advantage after the first. El Toro is ranked No. 4 in Division I.
Sandy Ryan scored two goals for La Canada.
Cyrus Jamnejad scored three goals to pace the Spartans’ 4-2 first-round victory over Arlington.
Burroughs 7, Flintridge Prep 6--Jason Falitz scored five goals for the Indians (12-2), who were tied, 5-5, going into the fourth quarter of a nonleague game at Burroughs.
Sam Tyre scored three goals for Flintridge Prep (5-7).
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Westlake def. Thousand Oaks, 15-9, 15-10, 15-9--Stacey Lee had 11 kills, Lauren Mills added 10 and the Warriors (4-1, 3-0), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times, won a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.
Lisa Kennedy had nine kills for Thousand Oaks (5-4, 3-1), ranked No. 10.
Harvard-Westlake def. Notre Dame Academy, 11-15, 15-9, 15-10, 5-15, 15-8--Anna Nesser and Karalyn Kuchenbecker each had 11 kills in a nonleague match for the host Wolverines (7-3), ranked No. 2 in the region.
Royal def. Moorpark, 15-7, 6-15, 15-3, 15-4--Amanda Kiser had seven of her 15 kills in the first game for the third-ranked Highlanders (8-3, 3-0) in a Marmonte League match at Moorpark.
Kari VanFleet, a starting outsider hitter for Royal, left the match with a knee injury.
Oxnard def. Dos Pueblos 15-12, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11--Sarah Morrison had 19 kills and five blocks for the Yellowjackets in a Pacific View League victory at Oxnard.
Jennifer Otani collected 10 kills and eight aces for Oxnard (5-0, 3-0), ranked No. 6 in the region.
Chatsworth def. Birmingham, 15-2, 15-2, 15-8--Sophomore Linda Wang had nine kills for the seventh-ranked Chancellors (4-0, 1-0) in a West Valley League match at Chatsworth.
Buena def. Ventura, 15-6, 13-15, 15-10, 10-15, 15-3--Krystal McFarland had seven of her 24 kills in the fifth game for the Bulldogs (6-2, 2-2) in a Channel League match at Buena.
Sylmar def. Monroe, 13-15, 14-16, 15-7, 15-4, 15-2--Stephanie Cisneros had 30 kills and the Spartans (3-1, 1-0) won a Valley Mission League match at Monroe.
Providence def. Buckley, 15-7, 10-15, 15-11, 15-12--Lauren Holt had 18 kills and the Pioneers (5-1, 3-0) won their 28th consecutive match in the Liberty League at Buckley.
Elizabeth Record had 20 digs for Buckley (3-3, 2-2).
Alemany def. Canyon, 15-8, 15-0, 8-15, 15-5--Brianne Lalonde had nine kills with seven digs and the Indians (6-0) won a nonleague match at Alemany.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Granada Hills 7, Cleveland 0--Jasmin Dao won at No. 1 singles and the Highlanders won their 42nd consecutive West Valley League match at Cleveland.
Yuka Otaka won at No. 3 singles for Granada Hills (4-0, 1-0) despite playing with flu-like symptoms.
Burroughs 10, Burbank 8--Jenny Wooldridge and Alicia Maddux swept at No. 3 doubles for the Indians in a Foothill League victory at Burroughs.
Dragana Ognoenovska also recorded a sweep in singles for Burroughs (6-0, 2-0).
GIRLS’ GOLF
Hart 117, Nordhoff 132--Sara Jones and Alexis Arnold shot one-over par 34s for the Indians (8-0) in a nonleague match at Vista Valencia Golf Course.
Nordhoff is 4-2.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Foothill League Meet No. 1--Nick Zoetewey of defending league champion Saugus, Luke Llamas of Canyon and Thomas Harley of Burbank ran together for the first 2 1/2 miles before Zoetewey pulled away for a victory in 16:14 over the three-mile course at Griffith Park.
Canyon, ranked first in the region by The Times, placed all five runners in the top 10, led by Llamas in second place at 16:18.
Brian Anderson of Burroughs, who has run one mile in 4:19, placed 12th in 16:58, while teammate Mike Navarro placed fifth in 16:31.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Foothill League Meet No. 1--Jazmin Treadway of defending league champion Canyon pulled away from the field after 1 1/2 miles and clocked 19:29 on the three-mile course at Griffith Park.
Five of the six schools had runners place in the top five.
