Alemany Defeats Bishop Amat on Late Touchdown

Tim Cantu’s 20-yard touchdown reception from Casey Clausen with one minute to play lifted Alemany High over Bishop Amat, 33-26, in a Del Rey League finale Friday night at Bishop Amat.

Alemany, which trailed 26-25, took over on its own 20-yard line with 3:46 remaining. The Indians (7-3, 1-2) drove 80 yards in 12 plays for the winning score, which came when Clausen found Cantu alone in the left corner of the end zone. It was Cantu’s only reception.

With the victory, the Indians enhanced their chance of earning an at-large berth in the Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Junior running back De’Andre Scott carried Alemany through three quarters, finishing with 124 yards rushing in 23 carries and three touchdowns.

Scott scored on an 89-yard kickoff return in the first quarter and added touchdown runs of one yard in the second quarter and 56 yards in third.

Clausen completed 15 of 29 passes for 172 yards. Derek Goodman had nine receptions for 108 yards, and he had a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to pull Alemany within 26-25.

Donnie McCleskey led Bishop Amat (5-5, 0-3), rushing for 341 yards and three touchdowns in 25 carries.

ANGELUS LEAGUE

St. Bernard 14, Harvard-Westlake 7--In a matchup of brothers playing for opposing teams, it was Armistead Scott of St. Bernard who finished one up on his younger brother, Austin, in an upset at Harvard-Westlake.

Armistead, a senior, rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries for the Vikings (4-6, 2-1), who finished in a tie for first with Harvard-Westlake (5-5, 2-1).

Armistead scored the winning touchdown on a 58-yard run with 3:17 to play and followed with a two-point conversion run.

After the touchdown, Harvard-Westlake drove to the St. Bernard 45, but Richard Irvin’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 1:12 remaining.

While his older brother was enjoying an impressive performance, sophomore running back Austin Scott of Harvard-Westlake rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries.

Irvin, the Wolverines’ freshman quarterback, completed six of 13 passes for 58 yards with two interceptions.
