Cerny Rushes Camarillo to League Title

Loren Cerny rushed for 241 yards in 21 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Camarillo High over Channel Islands, 42-12, to clinch the Pacific View League title Friday at Camarillo.

The Scorpions (5-4-1, 4-0 in league play) scored on their first possession when Cerny raced 56 yards.

After an interception by Mark Cardella, Camarillo running back Omar Contreras scored on a 13-yard run midway through the first quarter.

Channel Islands running back Robert Vorba scored on a three-yard run early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-6, but two plays into the Scorpions’ next possession, Cerny ran 61 yards to help build a 21-6 halftime lead.

Vorba’s second touchdown run of three yards helped Channel Islands (2-8, 1-3) cut the lead to 21-12 to open the third quarter.

Camarillo answered with a 74-yard drive in nine plays and Cerny scored his third touchdown on a one-yard run to build a 28-12 lead. The Scorpions weren’t challenged again.

After starting out 0-4-1, Camarillo heads into the playoffs on a roll with five consecutive victories.

Scorpion quarterback John Gonzalez was three-for-five passing for 46 yards and had one touchdown pass of 20 yards to Justin Peterson..

Channel Islands running back Omar Ortega finished with 95 yards rushing in 13 carries. Vorba finished with 55 yards in 19 carries.
