Court Curbs Actions of Mormon Critics
SALT LAKE CITY — A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order against two longtime critics of the Mormon Church who had been distributing portions of a church handbook.
The Mormon Church says Jerald and Sandra Tanner violated copyright law by posting portions of the document on their Web site.
The Tanners run Utah Lighthouse Ministry in Salt Lake City, a nonprofit organization offering books, a newsletter and a Web site that dispute teachings and practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Until the restraining order was issued, their Web site included pages from the Church Handbook of Instructions, a guide for Mormon clergy.
Sandra Tanner has said the pages were posted as a public service for Mormons who wanted to learn how to remove their names from church membership rolls.
