‘Thai Town’

Re “City Council Designates Area as ‘Thai Town,’ ” Oct. 28:
The sheer idea of “Thai Town” brings another isolationist approach to immigration by the Los Angeles City Council. Instead of assimilation into the American mainstream, this community now has an area in which to not speak, read, write or adopt the heritage, language and cultural riches of the country in which they now reside.
If the City Council thinking is correct, why do the Mexicans (who have been here a long, long time) only have one street (Olvera) on which to “bring pride” and “promote tourism”?
