Chinese Spying

Re “China Spying Systematic, Extensive, Panel Concludes,” May 25: Is anyone surprised to hear that China has been spying on us for the last 20 or more years? And guess what? We have been spying on them, too. So, this million-dollar study to prove what we all suspected should be used to fix the problems rather than to mount a new political attack. Countries do spy on each other, so let’s move into minimizing damage rather than spending several million assigning blame. Let’s face it, there may be decades of politicians to share this one.

When Rep. Christopher Cox and his colleagues cooked up the theory on how Chinese students/scientists/visitors and companies owned by or related to Chinese are the fronts of the “massive” Chinese espionage, it only reminded me of KKK strategies of instigating hatred toward people of color.
Irresponsible accusations like those do not serve any political purpose. I sincerely doubt the passion behind many of Cox’s generalized accusations of Chinese in America is anything other than old-fashioned racism.
