Nature Center Open for a Moonlit Hike

NEWHALL — The moon will not be completely full until Saturday, but the county Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a full moon hike at 8 tonight.
Great horned owls, opossums and other nocturnal creatures are among the animals that visitors might see as they hike near the Placerita Canyon Nature Center. It will be the only time the park is open at night, said Kathleen Ritner, a ranger for the Parks and Recreation Department.
“I think you’ll hear a lot of sounds from nature and fewer sounds from traffic,” Ritner said. “You’ll be able to hear and see so much more than you would in the daytime.”
Various trails a mile or less will be open. Ritner advised hikers to bring a flashlight and to wear good walking shoes.
Donations for the hike are requested; parking is free. Large groups should call in advance.
